Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles and illustrated by Jerome Lagarrigue is about John Henry and Joe who are best friends.  There is just one problem.  John Henry is black and Joe is white.  This means that Joe can't be John Henry's best friend.  Then a law passes that prohibits segregation, but people don't want to follow the law.  Joe and John Henry are happy that the pool is opening only to find that instead of opening to everyone the owners would rather fill it with asphalt.  A moving story about children overcoming segregation in the South.
