Hill, L. C. (2010). Dave the potter: artist, poet, slave. New York, NY: Little, Brown, and Company.
Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave beautifully illustrated book about a slave in South Carolina in the 1800's. The book takes us through the whole process of making a pot starting with the dirt, to clay, to the wheel, to glazing and ends with him writing a poem on the pot. It was very unusual for slaves to be skilled workers and unheard of for them to be able to read and write, but Dave could do all three. This would be a great story to share in Social Studies class when studying about slavery.
This looks like a beautifully illustrated book, rich in history. It could probably be used as a quick read aloud introduction to a pottery/clay unit in an art class too! Thanks for sharing.
