Garcia, R. (2010). One crazy summer. New York: Amistad.

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia is about three sisters, Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern, who are sent to visit their mother, Cecile, who abandoned them seven years ago.  They end up in Oakland, California with their mother who doesn't want them around and sends them to a summer day camp that is run by the Black Panthers.  During their time there, they learn about their rights, their country, their family and themselves.  This story is funny yet heart wrenching, because these girls just want attention from their mother and a hug.  Follow Dephine, Vonetta, and Fern on their summer adventure that is really one crazy summer.  You can follow the girls in a second book: P.S. Be Eleven.  This is definitely an upper elementary or middle school book.  It is historical fiction and could be used to support social studies classes.
