Book Post #19- The Storm in the Barn by Matt Phelan

Scott O'Dell Award Winner 2010

Phelan, M. (2009). The storm in the barn. Somerville, Mass.: Candlewick Press.

The Storm in the Barn by Matt Phelan is a graphic novel set during the Dust Bowl in 1937 Kansas.  Jack feels useless, because he can't help his father, he is bullied in town, and just doesn't quite know what to do with himself.  He has a sick sister and a young lively sister.  Ernie, his friend in town tells him great tales about the King of Blizzards and the King of the West Wind......so Jack spins a tall tale of the King of Storms who is hiding in an abandoned barn.  The sinister thing is the rain and wants to be worshiped as a god.  Jack, the unlikely hero, steps up and brings rain back to the area.  The illustrations are sparse and lacking much color due to the severe drought of the Dust Bowl.  This book could be used when learning about tall tales or the Dust Bowl.  I think struggling or reluctant readers would enjoy reading the visual story.
