Until this assignment, I had seen QR codes, but I wasn't exactly sure what they were. I don't have a smart phone or an Ipad so I have never had the opportunity to use one. I will have to admit this assignment was intimidating for me! When I first looked at the sandbox and the list of sites to visit, I was overwhelmed by what I was reading. I have put it off all week and I know I have to get it completed. So........I came back to it this morning and it isn't as scary as I thought. LOL! I love the idea in The Daring Librarian blog to post QR codes for book tailers on the bathroom door with a sign that reads " DO NOT Scan These!" Middle Schoolers will not be able to resist! However, our school policy is cellphones are off and in your locker and this will just encourage students to break the rules. We know that they all follow this rule, right???? Right!
I think I might try to use these codes this year in class. For example, at the beginning of school I could have a QR code posted on the bulletin board at my door that would take students and parents to our class website and to my blog. These could be fun to use in class as an introduction for a novel or any assignment really. I would have to get permission from my principal to have a BYOD day. I would also have to display it for students who do not have devices.......myself included! This assignment makes me want to get a smart phone!
My QR code is connected to my author study assignment for 642. I plan to use my author study at the beginning of school, because I plan to start with a novel by Jerry Spinelli. This should link to his webstite.
This next one should link to an interview with Jerry Spinelli talking about his book Stargirl.
This last one should link you to The Bunny Hop. In Stargirl there is a dance and she leads everyone in The Bunny Hop. I thought some of the students might not be familiar with it. I used one from the Lawrence Welk Show! I bet students aren't familiar with that either! LOL
I used I-nigma to create my codes, but QR Code Monkey seemed easy to use also. I hope these work! I have no way of checking them myself. This ended up being a fun activity. I don't know why I was so intimidated at the beginning. :)
Augmented Reality
I am so frustrated right now, because I don't have a device so that I can experience what I am reading about! The TED Talk was really cool and I like the idea of students explaining activities when you hover over a trigger image. The word wall idea was perfect! So many times students struggle with learning new vocabulary, but when putting in their own words with partners and then recording each other and overlaying over an image of the word.......WOW! They will love it! Unfortunately I am not sure I actually understand how to make it work. I followed the steps to complete an augmented reality picture, but I am not sure it is working. I tried to change my channel but I couldn't so I probably did something wrong. It is Amy Sinnett's Private Aura. I don't think you will be able to view it with the word private but I am at a loss as to how to fix it right now. I have been working for several hours on this and just need a break. If you are able to view it, then you will see it is about Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt.
I LOVE your link to the bunny hop. Then instead of you explaining the dance (or doing your own demo :) ) you can link to the LW show. The kids will love seeing it in action!!
ReplyDeleteI just got a smart phone a last week, and I only got one because my husband passed it down to me when he had to upgrade for his trip to London. So I feel your pain for not understanding them or being able to take advantage of really cool apps. I'm glad you discovered how to make QR codes now though. I am really excited about them.
ReplyDeleteI need to upgrade I guess, but hate to pay the bill for it! LOL
