Book Post #30- Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick

Schneider Family Book Award 2012

Selznick, B. (2011). Wonderstruck. New York, NY: Scholastic Press.

Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick is a wonderful combination of text and pictures. It follows a similar pattern of his award winning book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret.  We have Ben's story being told through text and Rose's story being told through pictures.  Ben has lost his mother and his hearing when he sets out to find  his father.  Rose is deaf also and keeps a scrapbook of a famous actress which she sets out to find.  Even though their stories take place at different times they weave together and it will surprise you in the end.  This book could be the perfect opportunity to discuss and practice sign language with students.
